UK Maddoes may like to see the following rundown of UK-only material in the British version of MAD, up to issue 289.

This list appeared in the private mailing of the Association of Comics Enthusiasts.

The cover illustrations referred to can be found on the excellent British MAD covers site.

Notes: Clive Collins is the brother of singer/drummer Phil Collins.
Dave Stoten went on to work with Spitting Image.

Good one Dave - it would be good to see a complete list at some point if whoever you swiped it from finishes it! I assume that the UK contribution to #86 was the UK political caricatures?

What do you know about Bowen - are these UK covers that were later used in other international editions, or were yhey produced abroad & swiped by the UK team? I always thought they were UK produced, but as my international collection has grown I've seen the same covers used on Swedish & German editions etc

This is a marvellous British Mad Data-base the like of which I have not seen before.
So much of 'British Mad' remains a mystery. Thanks to Melvin for his efforts to unravel this enigma.

I came across this item while rooting through files and posted it for speed.

The guy, Graham Webb (whom I met once, way back) did a fair job but made some slips - which may account for the omission you hint at in #86.

In particular, he confused some non-Brit stuff (like the work of Tom Hachtman) for British and vice versa (he excluded the work of Fulvio Bernadini, whose 'Hominid Sport' was British-based).

I've somewhere got the updates you speak of, and I'll try to look them out.

Later,
Dave

I know little about Bowen except that I always assumed the covers of this type to be farmed out to British "hack" artists who had no real feel for the US mag - the results are evident in the art! Ron Letchford didn't like these, either, and tried to "raise the bar" a little with Harry North, etc.

This intermingling of international covers occurred when Ron came on board and the international publishers traded artwork. Thus, the 'MAD Max' spoof is from Oz, the 'V' cover and article are from Sweden and the Miss Piggy cover is, I believe, from Germany (but don't quote me! If the Piggy cover has JR on it, then it's American!)

Similarly, the art from my '25 Years of MAD' was passed to Sweden, but I've never seen a copy. I'm anxious to do so, as I suspect that some of my words may have gone over, with them!

Just seen this, from ex- UK Maddo Dave Stoten and Tim Watts whom, I believe, lived near me in Leicester as a lad...

It was Oscar-nominated!

I am sure it was imitating someone since they all sounded the same and I noticed it being familar, it sounded like David Putt from seinfeld a bit, but if you do know, who were they imitating?

I don't know about the voice, but they all look like Kirk Douglas.

Hi,

Bowen was the Swedish version of Norman Mingo. He found success illustrating covers for the early issues of the Swedish MAD, until the early 1970's. His actual name is Bengt Olof Wennerberg, but was shortened to "Bowen". If he is still alive, he would be in his early 90's right now.

It is amazing how the cover art was passed around from country to country. There are a few covers which have appeared in the UK, Sweden, and Denmark editions (one that comes to mind is Alfred E. Neuman with a phonograph....ala, RCA and Nipper), and several more with at least two countries each.

Brilliant, Tim - proving that it's never too late to learn something new...

(which reminds me, I better start scanning that stuff for you)
